TV Truck Archived Newsletter (September-October 2000) Granger-Hunter
has a special camera to check the condition of sewer lines throughout the
District. This camera has the ability to rotate 360° making it possible to view a sewer line from a variety of
angles increasing maintenance efficiency and elevating the level of service GHID
provides. We check lines for things such as grease, roots and anything else that
has the potential to cause an obstruction in the system. We also monitor the
pipe for signs of degradation and need of replacement. We would like to focus on
the subject of root problems which periodically occur in the older areas of the
sewer collection system. Landscaping trees line our streets to make things beautiful. These trees are
typically located between the sidewalk and gutter. As these trees mature they
may cause problems with the sewer lateral to your home. Quite often they also
cause problems with the main sewer line. Tree roots seeking moisture and
nutrients, contained in the sewer lines, grow through the pipe joints. When
these roots get into a sewer lateral or main line a blockage takes place and
creates the potential for a sewer plug. A sewer plug usually shows up as flooding in the basements of
homes, which is not pleasant. GHID has an ongoing maintenance
program to cut the roots out of the main sewer lines. Cutting roots out
of private sewer laterals rests with the property owner. Typically
a commercial rooter company is hired to remove these roots. As the roots
are cut they get into the main
sewer line and cause more problems for other people down the line. To
help us stop these problems before
they start we request that property owners contact our office at 968-3551
or email us at
joel@ghid.org
prior to cutting the roots so that we can retrieve them from the nearest
manhole before they plug the main line. This is a
no-charge GHID service that will save
all of us future problems. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
