    About Granger-Hunter

    Granger-Hunter Improvement District

The District was organized in 1950 and currently provides water and wastewater services to a population of approximately 120,000 in a 24.5 square mile area in the central portion of Salt Lake County. The District employs 72 people and operates and maintains more than 364 miles of water lines, eight storage reservoirs, eight deep water wells, approximately 350 miles of Wastewater collection lines and 17 Wastewater pump stations. The District continues to upgrade its infrastructure to ensure that these assets are maintained in proper working order and that they comply with all state and federal regulations.

In 1953 Granger-Hunter had 312 connections. By 1960, the number of connections grew to 3,149. In the three decades that followed, the District grew to more than 20,000 connections. At the end of 2010, the total number of connections had risen to approximately 26,861.

To keep up with the continual growth, in 1978 the District entered into an inter-local agreement with 2 cities and 4 improvement districts to construct the Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility. This facility processes all of the wastewater for Granger-Hunter.

In addition to its own water sources, the District has entered into a contract to purchase culinary water from Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. For the year ending 12/31/2016 Granger-Hunter purchased 5.8 billion gallons, while at the same time produced 1.5 billion gallons.

The Engineering Department reviews and approves all proposed construction plans pertaining to water and wastewater connections and usage. Inspects all approved construction to ensure proper construction practices are followed. Provides blue staking services in connection with Blue Stakes of Utah. Oversees water system quality control through consistent monitoring and testing as well as established backflow and cross connection prevention programs. Maintains wastewater and water system records (e.g. maps, plans, applications, easements etc.).

Granger-Hunter Improvement District's sanitary sewer collection system is a series of over 300 miles of wastewater lines with more than 6,000 manholes and 13 wastewater pumping stations. The function of this collection system is to ensure the safe, consistent, trouble free conveyance of wastewater to the Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility for treatment.

The District's Wastewater Department staff is responsible for the maintenance , inspection and repair of the entire collection system. This is accomplished by the use of three combination wastewater cleaning trucks, equipped with high pressure jetting hoses and suction capability. These trucks are used to routinely clean collection system lines. State-of-the-art Closed Circuit TV trucks. These units deploy video cameras mounted on a remote controlled tractors with the ability to inspect 360° inside all District wastewater pipelines, ranging in size from 6" to 48" in diameter. In addition to maintaining pipe lines, the department also manages and maintains thirteen wastewater pumping stations.

For more than 60 years Granger-Hunter has been providing culinary water to the Granger and Hunter communities. What began as a small operation with only 312 connections has grown into the biggest improvement district in the state. We now serve a population of approximately 120,000 people with 7 wells, 25 million gallons of storage and 400 miles of piping and are proud to provide our customers with approximately 9 billion gallons of safe and clean drinking water every year.
